Blowing Out the Candle
Once upon a time, Leo felt a big red volcano of anger rumbling inside his chest because his block tower fell down. His hands wanted to stomp and throw. But Daddy knelt down calmly and held up five fingers like birthday candles. "Let's blow out the birthday candles together, Leo. Smell the sweet cake: breathe in through your nose, 1, 2, 3..." Leo breathed in deep, filling his belly with cool air. "Now blow out candle number one: whooooo!" Down went one finger. "Breathe in sweet cake... blow out candle number two: whooooo!" With each slow breath, the hot volcano inside Leo cooled down into a calm, quiet garden. By the time all five candles were blown out, Leo's chest felt light, his fists were relaxed, and his face had a peaceful smile. "I feel better, Daddy," whispered Leo. "Deep breaths always bring peace back," hugged Daddy.
